The objectives of this study were to evaluate the minimum and maximum pressures on the upstream side of the pumping station and to provide recommendations for surge suppresion devices. This required building a detailed numerical model and investigating the protection provided by air vessels, hydraulic dampers, air valves and checkvalves (individually and in combination). This proved to be a challenging problem, since the steady, initial pressure condition was already very near atmospheric and no negative pressures were allowed during the transient. Recommendations were given for protecting the system.

Seawater intake pipeline

Objective

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the pressures in a pipeline between a new seawater intake station and air separation plant. This required building a detailed numerical model of the pumping station, pipeline and plant. The study revealed that the design discharge would not be achieved based on the original design and that unacceptable pressures will be experienced on the upstream and downstream sides of the pumping station for full pump trip, single pump trip and emergency shutdown scenarios. Air valves, hydraulic dampers and orifices were designed to achieve the design discharge and to provide surge protection. Recommendations were also given in terms operational control at the pumping station and plant.

Objective

The objective of this study was to evaluate pressures in the brine discharge line of a new integrated power and desalination plant. This required building a detailed model. The study showed that the pressures were acceptable for full pump trip and single pump trip scenarios. Recommendations were given on the required dynamic characteristics of the checkvalves to avoid checkvalve slam.
